It's been one month since a huge cyclone devastated western Myanmar. Survivors are crying out for help, but the country's military rulers are keeping the inflow of global aid at a mere trickle. Exiled lawmakers with the pro-democracy National Unity Government put the death toll at more than 450. Officials with the United Nations say the disaster has affected 1.6 million people. In Rakhine State, people are using rudimentary materials to build their own shelters. Many are Rohingya Muslims. Years of persecution have already brought them to breaking point. Local authorities issued an order last week banning international organizations from reaching disaster zones. The World Food Programme's aid is at a standstill. The chief of the WFP's Sittwe office expressed concern about the prolonged suspension. Fighting between the military and pro-democracy forces rages on, including in the northwestern region of Sagaing. One female resident says her home has been burned down three times since the violence began. Her family has rebuilt with what little remains. But now, Cyclone Mocha has turned their rice paddies into a muddy swamp, and robbed them of their livelihood.
