Southeast Asia gears up for flurry of summits NHK

Southeast Asia plays host to three major international summits over the coming week. They are the meetings of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, and the G20.

Preparations are underway in Cambodia for the ASEAN summit. More than 10,000 security personnel are on high alert in the capital, Phnom Penh.

The country currently holds the group's rotating chair. The meetings kick off on Friday.

Top leaders from around Asia and beyond will attend. They include Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and US President Joe Biden.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang arrived with his wife on Tuesday. The ASEAN summit meetings continue through Sunday.

Meanwhile in Thailand, authorities are tightening security for next week's APEC meetings.

Precautions at the conference venue in Bangkok include bomb-sniffing dogs and robotic baggage checks.

Thai police have also announced the arrests of more than 60,000 people during a month-long crackdown on drugs and illegal firearms. Officials say they have confiscated thousands of weapons and explosives.

This comes with the country still reeling from a massacre at a childcare center last month that left 36 people dead, including many children.

Indonesia will host the G20 summit in Bali on November 15 and 16. It is the first time for Indonesia to play host.
