Trump faces 34 criminal charges NHK

Prosecutors in New York have outlined 34 charges against former US President Donald Trump during a court appearance. Trump says he is not guilty.

The former president surrendered to authorities at a courthouse in Manhattan on Tuesday.

Investigators have been looking into his part in the payment of hush money during his 2016 campaign. Two women claimed to have had affairs with him. He is charged with falsifying business records and has plead not guilty to all the charges.

Trump didn't speak to reporters. However, he has previously said that Democrats have arrested their "leading opponent." White House officials have refused to comment.

A crowd of protesters and supporters gathered at a park near the court. US House Republican George Santos joined one of the rallies.

He said, "I'm not here for the cameras. I'm here to support the president of the United States, who's being unfairly attacked."

Trump says the man who led the investigation, District Attorney Alvin Bragg, is politically motivated. He plans to deliver remarks when he returns home to Florida.
