Israel continues air raid before Gaza ceasefire takes effect NHK

The ceasefire deal between Israel and the Islamic group Hamas has been widely welcomed. But uncertainties still remain as to whether the truce will take effect as scheduled on Sunday as new casualties were reported from an Israeli air raid in the northern Gaza Strip.

Mediators for the Israel-Hamas conflict on Wednesday announced the six-week ceasefire deal for Gaza. It also includes the freeing of 33 hostages held by Hamas and Israel releasing Palestinian prisoners.

Displaced Gaza residents taking shelter in Khan Younis in the south of the enclave voiced their joy. A man who said he fled from the north said his feelings are beyond words. He said the plight of people in Gaza and the war will finally be over.

US President Joe Biden made clear in his speech that his administration has worked together with the team of President-elect Donald Trump.

Biden said, "We're handing off to the next team a real opportunity for a better future for the Middle East." He added, "I hope they will take it."

Trump has also claimed credit, writing in a social media post that his victory in the November presidential election led to the deal.

He wrote, "it signaled to the entire World that my Administration would seek Peace and negotiate deals to ensure the safety of all Americans, and our Allies."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu talked with Trump over the phone on Wednesday night to express his gratitude, and confirmed that the two will meet in Washington shortly.

Netanyahu also conveyed his appreciation to President Biden over the phone.

Hamas released a statement on social media and thanked the mediators, including Qatar and Egypt. It expressed appreciation for all those who have "voiced solidarity with Gaza" and contributed to "halting the aggression."

But Qatar-based broadcaster Al Jazeera reported on Wednesday that Israel forces bombed northern Gaza, leaving 18 people dead or wounded.
