The defense team for a man sentenced to death over an arson attack at a famous animation studio in Kyoto has appealed the ruling.
The Kyoto District Court on Thursday sentenced Aoba Shinji to death, as demanded by prosecutors, for the attack that killed 36 employees and injured 32 at the studio of Kyoto Animation.
Prosecutors had charged Aoba with murder and arson after he doused the studio with gasoline and started the fire in July 2019.
The ruling said Aoba was neither insane nor had diminished capacity, and called the deaths of the 36 people grave and tragic.
The defense team filed the appeal on Friday. The lawyers had argued that Aoba suffered a mental disorder and could not be held criminally responsible.
