Russia's deputy foreign minister for Asian affairs has ruled out resuming peace treaty talks with Japan under the current circumstances. Andrey Rudenko spoke to reporters on Tuesday at an international forum in St. Petersburg. Russia's state-run Tass news agency quoted Rudenko as saying, "The policy of Japan's current government makes it impossible to resume not only peace treaty talks, but also many other projects and agreements we had in mind." He also said, "We will wait until the situation changes and then we will think about what to do next." His remarks apparently referred to Japan's sanctions against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. Referring to Japan's Group of Seven presidency next year, Rudenko described the role Japan has opted for as "profoundly regrettable." The other G7 nations are also imposing sanctions. Russia unilaterally announced in March that it will suspend peace treaty negotiations in response to the sanctions. The talks include the issue of the Northern Territories. Russia controls the four islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.
