Japan lawmaker Suzuki Muneo meets Russian deputy foreign minister in Moscow NHK

Japanese opposition lawmaker Suzuki Muneo has revealed that he met with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko in Moscow.

Suzuki told reporters in the Russian capital on Wednesday that he held the talks the previous day.

The Upper House member said he called on the Russian side to resume a program that enables Japanese citizens to visit their ancestors' graves on Russian-held islands claimed by Japan.

Suzuki said Rudenko, who is in charge of Asian affairs, explained that the framework of the program still exists but it is currently suspended and blamed decisions and responses Japan has made since last year.

Rudenko was apparently referring to Japan's sanctions policy after Russia invaded Ukraine.

Russia controls the four islands. Japan claims them. The Japanese government maintains that the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory. It says the islands were illegally occupied after World War Two.

Suzuki said he also mentioned a bilateral agreement that allows Japanese fishing boats to operate safely near the Russian-held islands.

Suzuki said Rudenko noted that Russia has not yet entered annual talks on the matter because Japan's stance is a problem.

Meanwhile, Nippon Ishin Japan Innovation Party, which Suzuki belongs to, says he visited Russia without its permission and it will consider penalties.

Suzuki said an aide was late with the proper notifications. He added that he will return to Japan on Thursday and is making arrangements to meet party head Baba Nobuyuki and others.

Suzuki said he visited Russia, thinking that holding dialogue is necessary under the current situation. He said his visit was worthwhile as he was able to exchange candid opinions.
