China showcases its homegrown passenger jet for 1st time abroad NHK

China's homegrown passenger jet has made its international debut at the Singapore Air Show, the largest aerospace and defense trade show in Asia.

The C919 made a demonstration flight on Tuesday. Visitors flocked to the outdoor exhibition space to see the airliner and learn its specs.

The aircraft is said to be a potential rival to the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. China is expected to launch an international sales pitch.

The Japanese Defense Ministry's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency is taking part in the show for the first time.

Its booth features 13 Japanese companies, whose officials are promoting their technology using models and other equipment.

Agency official Fukawa Hideki says the agency aims to showcase Japan's technology to the world and advance cooperation in defense equipment and technology.

More than 1,000 exhibitors from over 50 countries and regions are taking part in the Singapore Air Show. The event will continue through February 25.
