Leaders in Europe have agreed to send a multinational force to Ukraine in the event of a ceasefire with Russia. However, officials in Moscow have criticized the decision, calling it a "direct threat."
The Russian Foreign Ministry released a statement on Thursday warning against the plan. It said Russian forces would consider Western military units to be "legitimate combat targets."
Leaders from the so-called Coalition of the Willing held a summit on Tuesday to discuss ways of helping Kyiv. They were joined by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
They issued a statement saying the multinational force will be supported by the US, and personnel from France and Britain are likely to join the effort.
On Thursday, Zelenskyy offered an update about security guarantees between Ukraine and the US. He said they are "essentially ready" to finalize the document with President Donald Trump.
