S.Korea unveils Indo-Pacific strategy, vows cooperation with Japan, US NHK

South Korea has unveiled an Indo-Pacific strategy whereby it will promote cooperation with Japan and the United States in dealing with issues such as North Korea's nuclear development.

On Wednesday, President Yoon Suk-yeol's administration announced what it calls the country's first comprehensive regional strategy.

The government pledges to promote cooperation with countries that share universal values such as freedom and democracy in tackling challenges such as climate change. It also says South Korea will expand regional economic security networks to secure stable and resilient supply chains.

The strategy says complete denuclearization of North Korea is critical for maintaining peace in the region and the world. It also says South Korea will boost its trilateral security cooperation with Japan and the United States.

The strategy reaffirms the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait for the peace and stability of the Korean Peninsula and for the security and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific.

In the strategy, South Korea describes China as a key partner. It pledges to pursue shared interests based on mutual respect and reciprocity, guided by international norms and rules.
