At least 32 people have been killed in southern Brazil after what meteorologists call "an extratropical cyclone" struck the area. The storm moved in on Monday, carrying torrential rains and heavy winds that battered more than 60 cities, mainly in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Residents saw water rise quickly and rivers overflow their banks. Rescue crews are rushing to save people still trapped in their homes or cars. Thousands are in need of clothing, shelter and food. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has sent two of his ministers to report on the damage. He said the federal government will "be there to save people" from their problems. Residents of the same region had already suffered through a cyclone in June. Meteorologists say climate change is causing the extreme rainfall, and they are warning of more rain in the next few days.
