Monday marks four years since Japanese doctor Nakamura Tetsu, who provided humanitarian support in Afghanistan for many years, was shot dead in the country. Nakamura was gunned down in the eastern province of Nangarhar on December 4, 2019. He was 73 years old. It remains unclear who killed Nakamura or for what reason. An investigation has stalled since before and after the Taliban returned to power in 2021. Nakamura was the local representative of the Japanese NGO Peshawar-kai. Despite his death, the group has been providing support to people in Afghanistan, where food shortages are serious due to prolonged drought. A project to build an irrigation canal system began in the Kot district of Nangarhar about one year ago. It is expected to be completed next March, raising hopes that it will improve the lives of 14,000 people who live in the area. A local civil engineer, who worked with Nakamura for about 20 years, is playing a central role in sharing a method devised by the doctor with residents engaged in the project. He said Nakamura sought to create jobs for people in Afghanistan as part of his efforts to increase their income so that they can eventually smile. He pledged to make the doctor's dream come true. A resident engaged in the irrigation project said he is very happy to feel his neighborhood will be able to develop thanks to Nakamura's colleagues.
