While the conflict in Myanmar may be escalating, the leader of neighboring Thailand says the military regime in the country is losing power. Fighting between the Myanmar military and ethnic armed groups as well as pro-democracy forces has been going on ever since the 2021 coup. But a number of military outposts in the western state of Rakhine and in the northern state of Kachin have fallen. In an interview with Reuters news agency, the Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said, " I think we all know that the current regime is starting to lose some strength." Srettha also stressed the need to pursue talks to resolve the conflict. Thailand has been hoping for talks between Myanmar's military and opposition groups. The country sent its first batch of relief supplies to Myanmar in March. Tens of thousands of people have fled the war-torn country into Thailand since the coup.
