B: Hi, not too bad. What's up with you?

A: I just heard some news about these people of Japanese descent living in the Philippines. They're trying to get Japanese nationality because their dads were Japanese and moved there before the war.

B: No way! What happened to their dads during the war?

A: Well, they say some of them died or got deported to Japan after the war. But here's the thing, these people don't have any documents to prove their dad was Japanese.

B: Wow, that must be tough for them. How many are there trying to get Japanese nationality?

A: About 50, as far as I know. They had a news conference in Tokyo about it recently. The bad news is that four of the older ones (79-82) have been rejected by family courts already.

B: That's too bad! What do you mean their requests got rejected?

A: The courts say they can't prove their Japanese dad recognized them as their child or that there was a legal parent-child relationship. Their lawyers even submitted DNA results and other stuff, but it didn't help.

B: I see. That sounds really frustrating for those people. What do they want most?

A: They just want to restore their bond with Japan while they're still alive. It's their biggest wish. The nonprofit organization supporting them is planning to appeal the decisions.
