South Korea has announced its first independent sanctions on North Korea over its illicit cyber activities. The South Korean Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the sanctions target four North Korean tech experts including hackers, and seven organizations including those under the country's military intelligence agency. The ministry said they are suspected of involvement in cyberattacks and programming related to cryptocurrency theft. The sanctions are designed to address cyber activities thought to provide revenue for North Korea's missile and nuclear programs. The measures will ban financial transactions with the targets. This is the third set of independent sanctions on the North by the South Korean government under President Yoon Suk-yeol, and the first over illicit activities. A recent report submitted to the UN Security Council said North Korea stole more cryptocurrency assets in 2022 than any other year. The Reuters news agency said the assets could be worth about 1 billion dollars. Intelligence agencies of South Korea and the United States on Friday disclosed internet protocol addresses of entities suspected of involvement in cyberattacks as part of global cryptocurrency theft by North Korean hackers.
