Major talent agency Yoshimoto Kogyo revealed in February that a number of its entertainers were being questioned by police on a voluntary basis over gambling allegations.

Takahira Kuruma, half of the popular comedy duo Reiwa Roman, has refrained from performing since he admitted gambling online over a period of about one year.

Nippon Professional Baseball announced in February that 14 people associated with seven teams had admitted gambling at online casinos. The revelation came after NPB asked all 12 teams to check if players and staff members had ever used online casinos.

Table tennis player Niwa Koki allegedly gambled online. Papers were sent to prosecutors and he received a summary order to pay a fine of 100,000 yen, or about 670 dollars. Niwa won a medal in the men's team event in two consecutive Olympic Games.
