Mine collapse in China leaves 5 dead, 48 missing NHK

A coal mine collapse in China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region has left five people dead and 48 missing.

Outlets including China's state-run Xinhua News Agency report that a major collapse occurred at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, trapping workers and vehicles in the mine.

The accident also left six people injured.

About 900 rescue workers are on the scene and working around the clock.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered all efforts be made to rescue the missing people and treat the injured.
He also ordered the cause of the collapse to be investigated and those responsible held accountable.

Chinese media say the coal mine was operating during the lunar New Year holidays.
