Russian airstrikes on Ukraine kill 5 people, injure more than 100 others NHK

Russian forces are stepping up their offensives in Ukraine, using drones and missiles.

Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief General Valerii Zaluzhnyi said the country's air force downed all 35 drones, as well as 72 of 99 missiles launched by Russia on Tuesday.

The Russian airstrikes on Tuesday killed five people, including one in the capital, Kyiv, and two in the eastern city of Kharkiv. More than 100 others were injured.

At a nine-story apartment building in central Kyiv, a fire was caused by a Russian airstrike. Firefighters were seen tackling the blaze.

A 45-year-old resident said he heard an explosion when he was about to leave for work. He said at the moment when he and his wife took shelter in the bathroom, a huge blast rocked the building. He said he was shocked.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it targeted enterprises of the military-industrial complex, as well as storage sites for ammunition and weapons.

But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, saying that the absolute majority of them targeted civilian infrastructure.

Russia unleashed a massive barrage of airstrikes across Ukraine on Friday. Ukraine described the attacks as the largest that Russia has carried out since the invasion began in February 2022.

Meanwhile, the governor of the western Russian region of Belgorod said on Tuesday that a Ukrainian strike had killed one person and injured four others. The region borders Ukraine.
