Shanghai auto show opens amid escalating trade friction between China and US NHK

Automakers from around the world are pitching their cars at a major global motor show in Shanghai, China. Overseas firms are aiming to expand their business in the country as economic uncertainties grow amid escalating trade friction between China and the United States.



Auto Shanghai 2025 got underway on Wednesday.



About 1,000 car and auto parts manufacturers from China and abroad are showcasing their latest models and technologies.



China's biggest electric vehicle maker BYD displayed its latest EVs and a new technology that enables a range of 400 kilometers in just five minutes of charging.



German automaker Volkswagen unveiled its concept EV models, including one designed specifically for China.



Volkswagen Group's subsidiary, Audi, rolled out a sports type EV model under a new brand targeting the Chinese market.



Japan's Toyota Motor announced a plan to build an EV plant in Shanghai to promote its luxury brand in China.



Another Japanese automaker, Honda Motor, presented EV models featuring generative AI technologies developed by Chinese startup DeepSeek.



In the wake of tariffs introduced by the administration of US President Donald Trump, sales of EVs and other so-called new energy vehicles are surging in China. The boom is expected to continue in the world's largest auto market.
