With one month to go before South Korea's general election, polls show the ruling People Power Party in the lead over the largest opposition Democratic Party. South Korea holds general elections every four years. Voters will cast their ballots on April 10. Poll results published by Gallup Korea on Friday show the PPP had an approval rating of 37 percent, with the Democratic Party at 31 percent. The election is seen as a midterm assessment of the administration of President Yoon Suk-yeol, who has been in office for nearly two years. The ruling PPP aims to win a majority under the interim leadership of Han Dong-hoon to maintain stable governance. The former prosecutor is widely regarded as a future presidential candidate. The opposition Democratic Party currently has a majority in the National Assembly. Party members are ramping up their campaigns. But some observers point to discord within the opposition party as close associates of the party's leader, Lee Jae-myung, have mainly been chosen as candidates. Some politicians have left the two parties and formed new ones. It remains to be seen how those new parties will affect the election landscape.
