Israeli forces advance deeper into Gaza City NHK

US President Joe Biden has said that a "pause" is needed in the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday his troops are making progress and that "nothing will stop" them.

Palestinians have seen more evidence of that resolve. They are digging through the rubble after another airstrike on the Jabalia refugee camp, the largest in their territory. Health ministry officials said this one hit a school, killing 27 people.

More than 9,000 people have been killed in Gaza in four weeks of fighting, along with 1,400 Israelis.

Israeli commanders say their ground forces are making "significant" advances.

Israel Defense Forces Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi said, "Israeli fighters have been operating in Gaza City for the past few days, encircling it from several directions, deepening our push into the Gaza Strip and deepening our achievements."

Halevi says his troops maintain "high readiness in all arenas," including the northern border with Lebanon. Those units have been exchanging fire since last month with fighters from Hezbollah.

Israeli authorities had ordered residents to leave towns in the area. Still, two people were wounded in a rocket attack in Kiryat Shmona on Thursday.
