Japanese fencer Emura Misaki has won the women's individual sabre at the world fencing championships for the second time in a row. On Thursday, she became the first Japanese fencer to win two consecutive world championships in the event in Italy. Emura is ranked number one in the world. She faced a match point by a third-ranked Greek opponent at the semi-final, but survived to beat her. At the final, Emura defeated a fourth-ranked Greek fencer by 15 to 11. Emura won the same title last year to become the second Japanese to win a world fencing championship. The latest competition serves as a 2024 Paris Olympics qualifying event, and the victory has enhanced Emura's chances of taking part in the Games. Emura issued a comment through Japan's fencing federation, describing the latest bouts as being more like ones against herself, rather than with real competitors. She said she feels happy she could make history in Japan by pulling off the second straight victory. She said she is also glad that she could overcome mental weakness throughout the event.
