The operator of the TikTok social media site has asked a US court to delay a ban on its operations in the country that is due to take effect on January 19. The US passed legislation in April that stated the TikTok video-sharing app would be outlawed unless its China-based parent ByteDance sold the operation. Lawmakers said the move reflects concerns the app could be used by China to collect information on US citizens. A US federal appeals court last week upheld the ban as constitutional. In response, the company's lawyers filed an injunction for a delay until the US Supreme Court hears its appeal of the decision. TikTok says a pause in enforcing the ban will give the Supreme Court and the incoming US administration time to review the issue. The US Department of Justice has asked the appeals court to reject TikTok's request for a delay in imposing the ban.
