Unseasonably hot weather covered wide areas in Japan on Thursday, with temperatures rising above 35 degrees Celsius in some cities. The Meteorological Agency says sweltering weather prevailed over the Pacific coast from eastern to western Japan, as warm air flowed in toward a low pressure system over the Sea of Japan. The mercury climbed as if the season was mid-summer in the Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions, eastern and central Japan. Daytime highs above 35 degrees were registered in Shizuoka City, Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture, and Kuwana City in Mie Prefecture. That was the latest day ever of a year with a daytime high of 35 degrees or over in these cities as well as the entire Tokai and Kanto-Koshin regions, since the weather agency began taking records. The temperature also rose in central Tokyo on Thursday, marking the 90th day of this year with a daytime high of 30 degrees or over. The figure surpassed the previous record. Another hot day is expected across the country on Friday. Daytime highs are predicted to reach 33 degrees in Nagoya City and Kyoto City, and 32 degrees in the cities of Osaka and Shizuoka. Weather officials are calling on people to be on alert for heatstroke, and to regularly drink enough water.
