Western leaders have pledged continued support for Ukraine at the Munich Security Conference in Germany. However, it remains unknown whether Kyiv's request for the swift supply of weapons will be accepted. The three-day conference ended on Sunday. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell told the participants that Ukraine is facing shortages of ammunition and called for speedier military assistance. The meeting was held ahead of the first anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24. The chairman of the conference, Christoph Heusgen, told NHK that Russian President Vladimir Putin "believes that we don't have the strength to sustain support to Ukraine." He also said trans-Atlantic unity will be the key. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the conference via video link and appealed for quicker deliveries of weapons. But German Chancellor Olaf Scholz remained cautious, arguing that NATO members must not be drawn into the conflict. It remains to be seen whether countries will swiftly heed Ukraine's request for artillery and tanks, and whether they will decide to supply Kyiv with fighter jets.
