China's Foreign Ministry says a Japanese man detained in the country is suspected of engaging in espionage activities.
Major Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma has confirmed that one of its employees in his 50s was detained in Beijing on suspicion of violating Chinese law.
On Monday, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told reporters that the relevant Chinese authorities earlier this month took measures against the individual.
She said the Japanese citizen is suspected of violating China's criminal and anti-espionage laws. But she did not disclose details of the charges.
The spokesperson went on to say that similar incidents have occurred in recent years, and that Japan should do more to encourage its citizens not to engage in such activities.
The Japanese government is strongly urging China to quickly release the Japanese national, while requesting that consular officials be allowed to meet with him.
