Singapore Airshow features cutting-edge drones, Chinese passenger jet NHK

Asia's largest aerospace and defense trade show kicked off on Tuesday in Singapore. Unmanned aircraft have been drawing attention, including models from US and Israeli companies. The cutting-edge drones include several that have been used in the war in Ukraine.

More than 1,000 companies from over 50 countries and regions are taking part in the event.

US company AeroVironment is exhibiting its Switchblade unmanned munitions aircraft. The Whitehouse has provided the drones to Ukraine to support the country's fight against Russia.

Israel's Elbit Systems also highlighted what it calls next-generation drones. The company says its new aircraft is designed to fly autonomously for about 24 hours.

This comes at a time when the country's military has been intensifying its offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Ziv Avni, Vice President of Elbit Systems, said: "Globally, the demand for drones is increasing. That's why we're constantly innovating and adding capabilities to our drones like what we just launched."

Meanwhile, China's domestically developed C919 passenger jet made its international debut at the event.

The aircraft is said to be a potential rival to the Airbus A320 and the Boeing 737. It took off for a demonstration flight at the show, with China targeting sales to international airlines.

The Japan Defense Ministry's Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency is also taking part in the show for the first time.

Its booth features Kawasaki Heavy Industries and 12 other Japanese companies promoting their aerospace technology.
