N.Korea showcases ICBM in parade, marking 75th anniversary of armed forces NHK

North Korea's state-run television carried coverage of a huge military parade held in Pyongyang on Wednesday night, presided over by leader Kim Jong Un. The event showcased the country's intercontinental ballistic missiles.

The parade marked the 75th anniversary of the country's armed forces. It was the first large-scale parade since April last year.

Kim attended the event with his wife and daughter. It is the first time video images of his daughter have been made public. Kim did not deliver a speech.

State media said the parade displayed units equipped with ICBMs, tactical nuclear weapons and long-distance cruise missiles.

Weapons shown in the event include North Korea's largest ICBM, the Hwasong-17. It was test-launched last November.

New types of missiles on large mobile launchers were also seen. Analysts say these may include a new solid-fuel ICBM.

Kim has said the country needs to mass-produce tactical nuclear weapons. He ordered his military to "exponentially" increase production of nuclear warheads and develop a new ICBM in 2023, the third year of the North's current five-year defense plan.
