Modi, Macron agree to strengthen strategic partnership NHK

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron held a summit meeting on Thursday, where they agreed to boost the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Modi welcomed Macron in India's historic city of Jaipur. The two had already met several times last year.

They agreed to a cooperation roadmap to jointly produce defense systems. The two also discussed security cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region amid China's growing maritime presence.

Modi and Macron touched on security issues in the Red Sea, where Yemen's Houthi rebels have been attacking commercial ships and disrupting global supply chains.

France is a close strategic partner and a key defense supplier of India. New Delhi is seeking to buy 26 Rafale fighter jets for its aircraft carrier. France also wants to sell more submarines to India.
