On the Hawaiian island of Maui, authorities have confirmed at least 89 deaths in devastating wildfires that broke out on Tuesday. The fires were fanned by strong winds caused by a hurricane, spreading quickly to Lahaina, the main urban area, and largely reducing it to ash. Local authorities announced that more than 1,400 people had taken shelter in a high school and churches as of Friday. Water and food have been distributed to them. They say that they will provide support at a community center this weekend for people whose family members are missing. The Pacific Disaster Center on Saturday released an assessment of the damage in Lahaina. It says that about 8.8 million square meters, or roughly 2,170 acres, were burned and that 86 percent of the affected buildings were residential, resulting in a need for shelters for 4,500 people. A total of 2,207 structures were damaged or destroyed, and about 5.52 billion dollars is needed to rebuild what has been lost.
