Israeli protesters take to streets in Jerusalem, demanding Gaza ceasefire NHK

Israeli protesters have taken to the streets in Jerusalem, urging Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to agree to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

Israel has been intensifying its military offensive to seize control of Gaza City, the largest city in the enclave.

On Saturday for the second consecutive day, Israeli military forces continued their attack on a high-rise building there, which they believe has been used by Hamas as a stronghold.

Ceasefire negotiations have been stalled as the Israeli government and Hamas have yet to narrow their differences.

Hamas has agreed to a proposed 60-day truce, including the partial release of hostages, while the Israeli government demands the release of all hostages and Hamas's disarmament.

On Saturday, protesters gathered in front of the prime minister's office in Jerusalem to oppose the expansion of the Israeli military operation in Gaza.

The demonstrators say a more extensive military operation will only put the lives of hostages at risk, and increase casualties among Gaza's residents.

A man who took part in the rally said the demonstrators want to achieve a deal to get the hostages released as soon as possible, stop the killing, and end the famine in Gaza.

Health authorities in Gaza said on Saturday that 68 people had been killed over the preceding 24 hours, bringing the death toll to 64,368 since the current conflict began in October 2023.
