Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva has been handed a four-year ban for doping by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, or CAS. Valieva won gold for the Russian Olympic Committee in the team competition at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. It later came to light that she had tested positive for the banned substance trimetazidine at the Russian national championships in December 2021. The ban imposed on her by CAS on Monday is backdated to December 25, 2021. The tribunal also ordered the disqualification of "all competitive results" achieved by Valieva since December 25, 2021. The CAS's latest ruling came after the World Anti-Doping Agency, or WADA, appealed to CAS a decision last year by Russia's anti-doping agency RUSADA to clear her of any wrongdoing. RUSADA said Valieva bore no fault, as the skater, who was 15 years old at the time she tested positive, was a "protected person" under WADA rules. It imposed no sanctions except for the disqualification of her results at the Russian national championships. In the latest ruling, CAS said Valieva was not able to prove that she had not intentionally violated an anti-doping rule. CAS said Valieva can "file an appeal to the Swiss Federal Tribunal within 30 days on limited grounds."
