Trump's inauguration ceremony to start soon NHK

The US presidential inauguration ceremony for Donald Trump is to begin soon on Monday, local time. He will be sworn in as the 47th president of the United States.

As the US capital Washington has been hit by severe cold and strong winds, the ceremony will be held in the rotunda of the Capitol building.

On Sunday, Trump held a rally in the city, stressing that he will meet the expectations of his supporters.

He vowed to bring about a profound shift from policies taken under the administration of his predecessor Joe Biden, including those on illegal immigration, tariffs and energy. Trump said, "I will act with historic speed and strength and fix every single crisis facing our country."

He added, "You're going to see executive orders that are going to make you extremely happy. Lots of them."

The president-elect is due to meet Biden at the White House on Monday morning and head to the ceremony venue.

He will be sworn in and become president for the second time at noon, as stipulated by the Constitution.

Polls by CNN, Fox News and others show opinions on Trump closely split between favorable and unfavorable.
