The parachute unit of Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force invited the public to watch a drill aimed at preparing for attacks on the country's remote islands. The First Airborne Brigade of the Ground Self-Defense Force held the drill on Sunday at a training ground in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo. In recent years, the annual drill has been based on the scenario of retaking a remote island that an enemy had invaded. Participants parachuted from transport planes. They were supported by helicopters after landing. British and Australian soldiers took part in the exercise for the first time. The approximately 30 soldiers were joined by about 70 US troops. Defense Minister Hamada Yasukazu told reporters that the drill demonstrated strong cooperation with the US and other partners. The Defense Ministry says it aims to strengthen cooperation with the US and other partners to maintain a free and open international order based on Japan's National Security Strategy, which was approved last month.
