Lavrov: Russia to judge incoming Trump administration by its policy NHK

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated that Moscow will deal with the incoming US administration of Donald Trump based on its policy toward Russia.

Lavrov spoke in an interview aired by Russia's state-run TV on Thursday.

Asked whether entrepreneur Elon Musk's role in the second Trump administration could lead to a new kind of thinking, Lavrov said Russia will refrain from making any guesses or trying to predict the future.

He added that Moscow will judge the administration by what it does, not what it says.

Regarding Trump's claim that he could end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours, Lavrov said he does not want to focus on that. He said everything that US administrations do is ultimately aimed at suppressing Russia as a competitor.

Asked about Russian President Vladimir Putin's indication of his readiness to meet Trump, Lavrov said the ball is in the US's court.

Putin made the indication at an international conference in the southern Russian city of Sochi last week after Trump had won the US presidential election.

The Washington Post said on Sunday that Trump and Putin spoke over the phone on November 7 after the election. But the Kremlin dismissed the report as false information.
