A Japanese UN volunteer who was killed in Cambodia while monitoring the country's 1993 election was remembered on Saturday, the 30th anniversary of his death. Japan's ambassador to Cambodia and other officials visited a cenotaph in the capital Phnom Penh to remember Nakata Atsuhito. They laid flowers and offered a silent prayer. Nakata was gunned down on April 8, 1993, while traveling by car in the central province of Kampong Thom. He was 25 years old. Ambassador Ueno Atsushi said many Cambodians have told him that they will never forget Nakata. Ueno also said Japan will continue to contribute to the peace and democracy of Cambodia. The security situation in Cambodia was severe at the time of the shooting. One month after Nakata's death, Japanese police officer Takata Haruyuki was shot dead while taking part in a UN peacekeeping mission in the country.
