Japanese weather officials say snow has accumulated at levels far above average mainly in Hokuriku and other regions along the Sea of Japan.
People are advised to exercise caution following multiple reports of vehicles slipping on icy roads and other accidents.
The Meteorological Agency says western and northern areas along the Japan Sea are being hit by heavy snow caused by a midwinter-level cold air mass and a winter pressure pattern.
The agency says that during the 24 hours through 5 a.m. on Saturday, snowfall reached 59 centimeters in Nozawaonsen Village in Nagano Prefecture, 53 centimeters in Tsunan Town in Niigata Prefecture, and 52 centimeters in Minakami Town in Gunma Prefecture.
As of 5 a.m. on Saturday, there was 93 centimeters of snow in Shirakawa Village in Gifu Prefecture, 92 centimeters in Tsunan Town in Niigata, and 69 centimeters in Hakusan City in Ishikawa Prefecture.
Snow is also accumulating in western Japan, with 54 centimeters in Shobara City in Hiroshima Prefecture, 44 centimeters in Nagahama City in Shiga Prefecture, and 11 centimeters in Tottori City in Tottori Prefecture.
Weather officials say more is expected in Hokuriku and other regions mainly along the Japan Sea.
They are warning of traffic disruptions, as well as blackouts and avalanches.
Hokuriku Electric Power Company says about 2,000 households, mainly in mountainous areas of the Noto region in Ishikawa Prefecture, were without power as of 5 a.m. on Saturday.
