Three Diet members of Japan's main ruling Liberal Democratic Party say they intend to attend an Upper House ethics panel to face questioning over a political fundraising scandal.

Dozens of lawmakers from factions in the LDP are under fire for their failure to properly declare revenue from fundraisers and receiving kickbacks. Many belonged to the LDP's largest faction, which was once led by the late Prime Minister Abe Shinzo.

The Upper House ethics panel on Tuesday finished asking 32 lawmakers whether they will attend ethics council sessions as requested by opposition parties, including the largest Constitutional Democratic Party.

It was reported at a meeting of council officials that three LDP lawmakers agreed to attend. They are former LDP Upper House Secretary-General Seko Hiroshige, former Olympic and Paralympic minister Hashimoto Seiko and Upper House member Nishida Shoji. All three belonged to the Abe faction.

Twenty-eight others declined to attend and one lawmaker did not reply before the deadline.

Sources said that Seko and Nishida are willing to speak in the presence of the media, whereas Hashimoto reportedly said she will leave the decision up to the panel.

At Tuesday's council meeting, the ruling bloc proposed to hold the ethics panel on Thursday. The opposition parties said they will consider the idea further before responding.
