The mayor of the southern Philippine city of Davao has announced his own war on drugs. Sebastian Duterte is a son of former President Rodrigo Duterte who led an anti-narcotics crackdown that left thousands dead.
Duterte last Friday warned in a speech that drug dealers either leave or face death. He said, "This will be your chance to get out of this city."
He justified his announcement, saying he is doing it to safeguard the community and Filipino families.
At least five drug suspects have reportedly been killed in separate incidents since Duterte made his announcement.
The country's Commission on Human Rights expressed "grave concern" over the mayor's declaration.
During Rodrigo Duterte's term as president from 2016 through 2022, "war on drugs" was his signature campaign slogan. Government records show at least 6,000 Filipinos were killed in police operations related to the campaign.
The International Criminal Court has since been investigating the deadly war against drugs for alleged crimes against humanity.
