Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine have killed eight people and injured more than 20.

The General Staff of Ukrainian Armed Forces said a fierce Russian offensive continued on Friday in Sloviansk and elsewhere in the Donetsk region in the country's east.

Donetsk Governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said on social media the death toll from the attacks included a two-year-old child.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assaults. He referred to Russia as an evil state and said Ukraine will not leave any enemy unpunished.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said his country is preparing counteroffensives supported by Western nations. Shmyhal is in the United States and spoke to reporters on Thursday.

He said Ukraine remains united with the US and other partners in its ongoing military fight. He stressed that his country will win.

He also proposed that Russian assets be confiscated and used for recovery efforts in Ukraine.

He also expressed the hope that his proposal will be discussed at the Group of Seven summit slated for May in Hiroshima, Japan.
