An NHK camera caught flames rising from the barges. Explosions occurred occasionally as fireworks were set off by the blaze.



Police and coast guard officials said the two vessels were among eight being used for the fireworks display.



One of the two was carrying five workers, who were all rescued after jumping into the sea. Fire department officials say one was taken to hospital with minor injuries. There were no people on the other barge.



The organizer of the event told police that a fireworks launch system went out of control. Investigators are looking into what happened.
