Macron eyes 30% hike in defense spending NHK

French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged to increase his country's defense spending in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

On Friday, he delivered a speech to senior military officials and personnel at an air base in southwestern France.

Macron proposed spending 413 billion euros, or nearly 450 billion dollars, between 2024 and 2030 to modernize the military. That's about 30 percent up from the current seven-year period.

Macron said France must "be ready for more brutal and numerous wars."

The proposal includes maintaining and strengthening nuclear deterrence, reinforcing cyber defense, and deploying advanced drones and fighter jets.

Macron also said France needs to boost its presence in the Indian Ocean and the Asia-Pacific, where China is becoming increasingly assertive.
