Car-ramming at school in China injures several NHK

A car plowed into people outside a primary school in Hunan, China, injuring several bystanders. Media report children were also hurt. Police have detained a 39-year-old male suspect.

Law enforcement in the city of Changde say the incident took place at about 7:40 a.m. Tuesday, local time.

The injured were taken to hospital. So far, none are said to be in life-threatening condition.

China's state-run Xinhua News Agency and other media outlets say children are among the injured, but they had not reported how many were hurt.

China has seen a spate of seemingly random attacks in crowded or public places.

Earlier this month, a driver steered his vehicle into a crowd and killed 35 people in Guangdong Province. A knife-wielding man killed eight at a vocational school in Jiangsu Province.

After the deaths in Guangdong, Chinese President Xi Jinping told officials nationwide to firmly prevent vicious crimes.

The latest incident is therefore drawing much attention. Some articles posted online included interviews with authorities, but such posts are no longer visible.

China's government is apparently struggling to keep the public calm.
