Kishida pledges steady efforts to support growth in Africa NHK

Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio has pledged his steady efforts to support growth in Africa through investments in renewable energy and other fields.

Kishida delivered a video message for an event in Tokyo on Saturday to mark the 30th anniversary of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development, or TICAD.

He said Japan has supported growth in Africa for 30 years. He added that the importance of Africa has been increasingly growing and it has gained a greater voice in the international community.

Kishida announced at last year's TICAD that Japan's public and private sectors would invest about 30 billion dollars in Africa over the following three years.

The investment is intended to be used in renewable energy and other environmental sectors, as well as in human resources development.

TICAD was launched in 1993 under Japan's initiative. The ninth edition of the conference will be held in the city of Yokohama, near Tokyo, in 2025.
