US President-elect Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum have both stressed on social media that they had a positive conversation on pending issues, including immigration. The talks came after Trump said on Monday that he will impose a 25-percent tariff on Mexico and Canada unless they stop illegal immigrants and drugs from coming into the United States through their borders. Sheinbaum posted on the X social media platform on Wednesday that she had an "excellent" conversation with Trump. She said she told Trump that Mexico has taken measures on migration and that caravans heading to the US border are being addressed within Mexico. Sheinbaum said she also informed Trump of the Mexican campaign against fentanyl, a drug that is flowing into the US and has become a major social problem. Trump also wrote on Truth Social that he had "a wonderful conversation" with the Mexican president on stopping migration through Mexico into the US and what can be done to stop the drug inflow. The positive tone is in a sharp contrast with Trump's tariff announcement and Sheinbaum's suggestion on Tuesday that Mexico could also raise tariffs in response. But it is not clear how far the two sides were able to narrow their differences. The New York Times notes that the Mexican president did not refer to tariffs or trade tensions in her post.
