'Flying car' makes demo flight at Osaka Expo NHK

A demo flight of a vehicle known as a "flying car" was conducted at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka on Monday, a day after its opening.

Three Japanese operators of such vehicles are planning to perform demo flights, without carrying passengers, throughout the six-month Expo. The vehicles were developed using drone technologies and are designed to carry people and cargo.

The first demo flight at the Expo had been scheduled for the opening day but was cancelled due to bad weather.

On Monday, the flight was shown to visitors twice under a sunny sky, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The vehicle was painted blue and red, the colors of the Expo's official character, Myaku-Myaku.

The vehicle, carrying a pilot, slowly rose to a height of about 10 meters, and stayed airborne for about seven minutes, making circles.

Among the three Japanese operators, trading firm Marubeni will conduct demo flights from April to July and in October. Venture company SkyDrive will showcase its flights from July to August, and airline firm ANA Holdings will perform flights from September to October.
