Caution advised for icy roads after snowfall in areas around Tokyo NHK

Weather officials are urging caution against icy roads after snow fell in wide areas of the Kanto-Koshin region that includes Tokyo. They are also warning of possible avalanches in mountainous areas as temperatures rise.

A low pressure system and a cold air mass brought snow to many parts of the region on Friday. A heavy snow warning was issued for Tokyo's 23 wards at one point.

The Tokyo Fire Department says 22 people were injured and taken to hospitals. The prefecture of Saitama, north of Tokyo, says 28 people suffered injuries, including one seriously injured.

The snow has gradually turned into rain, and as temperatures rise, snow is rapidly melting in southern flatlands. But snow accumulation remains mainly in inland areas.

As of 7 a.m. on Saturday, snow accumulation was 24 centimeters in the city of Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture, 15 centimeters in the city of Chichibu in Saitama Prefecture, and 10 centimeters in the city of Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture.

Temperatures are expected to be around 10 degrees Celsius higher on Saturday compared to Friday. Daytime highs are forecast to reach 14 degrees in the cities of Kofu and Saitama, 13 degrees in central Tokyo, the cities of Maebashi, Mito and Utsunomiya, and 12 degrees in the city of Yokohama.
