Ishiba Shigeru was reelected as Japan's 103rd prime minister by the Diet on Monday. The reelection follows the resignation of the Ishiba Cabinet earlier in the day. The ruling bloc lost its majority in the Lower House in the general election late last month. The first round of voting was held in the Lower House in the afternoon. Ishiba of the main ruling Liberal Democratic Party won 221 votes. Noda Yoshihiko of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party garnered 151. Other opposition leaders received fewer votes. As no one clinched a majority, the vote proceeded to a runoff between Ishiba and Noda. This is the first runoff in the chamber since 1994. In the second round, Ishiba won 221 votes while Noda took 160. Earlier, Ishiba also won the Upper House vote with 142 votes. Following his reelection, he met with Saito Tetsuo, the leader of the LDP's coalition partner, Komeito, and formed a new Cabinet. Ishiba appointed Suzuki Keisuke as justice minister and Eto Taku as agriculture minister, succeeding those who lost their seats in the general election. He also named Komeito's Nakano Hiromasa as land minister to replace Saito. The other ministers retained their positions.
