Shoigu downplays impact of Western weapons in Ukraine NHK

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu has said that Ukrainian forces are failing on the battlefield despite all the assistance they have received from the West.

Shoigu made the remarks on Tuesday in a meeting with military officials from China, India, and dozens of other countries at a conference on international security near Moscow.

Russia has pulled its partners closer since finding itself isolated on the world stage after launching the invasion of Ukraine. Shoigu offered up his views on the Ukrainian counteroffensive, saying the push has shown Western weapons are vulnerable.

Shoigu said, "The preliminary results of combat actions show that Ukraine's military resources are almost exhausted."

Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu joined the forum. He accused Western leaders of provoking their rivals.

Li said, "For the sake of a more inclusive world, we need to work together to resist any means of containment."

Russia has tried to downplay the impact of Western sanctions since the invasion began. However, it saw the ruble fall on Monday past 101 to the dollar. That is the lowest level since the early weeks of the war.

On Tuesday, Russia's central bank raised interest rates by 3.5 percentage points to halt the slide.
