Health authorities in the Gaza Strip say an airstrike on a residential building in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza on Tuesday left at least 93 people dead or missing in the area where Israeli forces are continuing operations aimed at eradicating Hamas fighters. A Palestinian media outlet says there were around 150 people living in the five-story building. It says many people were buried under rubble after the building collapsed following the strike. Various proposals have been put forth for negotiations over a ceasefire in Gaza between Israel and the Islamic group, though prospects for progress remain slim. The talks resumed on Sunday in Qatar, which serves as a mediator. US news site Axios reports that the director of the US Central Intelligence Agency, William Burns, who joined the talks, put forward a proposal which sets the duration of a ceasefire at four weeks. The media outlet says the proposal includes the release of roughly eight hostages in exchange for the freeing of several dozen Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prisons. Other proposals include one put forward by Egypt, another mediator which seeks a shorter period for a ceasefire. Axios says both Israel and Hamas will likely adjust their positions based on the results of the US presidential election.
